 INTERDEPENDENCE DAY
  Co-Existence or No Existence
In proclaiming Interdependence Day, we are acknowledging that we are all connected, and that when one thread in the web of life is sundered, all are diminished. Where equity and mutual respect prevail, all benefit. Interdependence Day is a day of celebration, information and action.

Launch of Interdependence Day 2002
In September 2002 We, The World launched Interdependence Day at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development at the Sacred Place in Ubuntu Village. Happy Interdependence Day! The launch was a success. We, The World Advisory Board Member Angaangaq Lyberth (Inuit Elder, 4 Worlds International Elder's Council), Mayan Spiritual Leaders Mercedes Longfellow and Gerardo Barrioro, and We, The World Board Member Diane Williams conducted a beautiful Interdependence Convocation Ceremony to launch this new global holiday.

Since the launch of Interdependence Day, Co-Sponsors' Interdependence Day activities have taken place in Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, India, Budapest, the United States, Canada, England, South Africa, Taiwan and elsewhere. We, The World/Interdependence Day collaborators CivWorld and The Democracy Collaborative produced a special program in Philadelphia which featured a presentation of the Declaration of Interdependence, the premiere of a choral work, greetings from the Mayor of Rome, then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former Czech president Vaclav Havel, plus remarks by former Senator Gary Hart, a tribute by distinguished poet Sonia Sanchez.and many other prominent individuals.

Since September 2004 Interdependence Day has become a major part of 11 Days of Global Unity. Interdependence Day is a time for celebration, information and action in recognition of our global interdependence!

Add your Interdependence Day activities to the Global Unity Calendar (
www.GlobalUnityCalendar.org) now!

More About 11 Days of Global Unity

In 2004 We, The World (www.WeTheWorld.org) launched  11 Days of Global Unity as a breakthrough platform for linking local awareness and action campaigns into an inspiring international movement for peace, sustainability and transformation.

Supporters of the launch included Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and  11 Days Honorary Co-Chairs Jane Goodall, Deepak Chopra, Irene Khan (Secretary General of Amnesty International), Marianne Williamson, John McConnell (one of the original Founders of Earth Day), Hazel Henderson, Ervin Laszlo, Jonathan Granoff, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Robert Thurman, Sally Fisher, Riane Eisler, Lynne Twist, Paul Winter, Nina Meyerhof, and New York City Councilman Alan J. Gerson.

11 Days includes concerts, festivals, webcasts and many other activities around the world. By combining artistic presentations, inspiration, consciousness-raising and taking action,  11 Days embodies our strategy of Inspire, Inform and Involve for moving humanity off the path of catastrophe and towards creating a world that works for all.

In 2006,  11 Days of Global Unity included a celebration of the 100 year Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's first nonviolent peace action September 11th 1906 to raise awareness about Apartheid in South Africa. Together with Gandhi's grandson, Arun Gandhi, we promoted Mahatma Gandhi's 11 Practices of Satyagraha during the  11 Days of Global Unity.

11 DAYS BACKGROUND
The U.N. International Day of Peace was started in 1981 as a day to announce and celebrate ceasefires in conflict areas around the world. It began as a moveable date taking place on the opening day of each new Session of the U.N. General Assembly in September. In 2001 the opening day of the new U.N. Session was scheduled for
September 11th. The U.N. decided to permanently fix the International Day of Peace on September 21st.

In 2004 We, The World launched 11 Days of Global Unity September 11-21 symbolically marking the transformative global journey from fear to hope. 11 Days is designed to maximize awareness about humanity's major challenges, and inspire, inform and involve the public in visionary solutions.

Please join us in celebration of the 11 Days of Global Unity, the International Day of Peace, and the culmination of WE: Unity and Peace of the WE Campaign! www.WE.net
